Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system for orthodontic treatment that involves a series of clear aligners custom fit to your teeth. After intensive treatment planning using digital scans and X-rays, you’ll receive your aligners and detailed instructions for their use.

Clear aligners like Invisalign shift your teeth by placing pressure at various points of the arch. They can do this because of their shape and not a system of wires, brackets, and rubber bands like braces. You must use your aligners in the correct order since each aligner pushes your teeth slightly closer to their final position.

What can Invisalign treat?

Like traditional metal braces, Invisalign can treat most of the most common forms of malalignment and malocclusion affecting adult teeth. Dr. Robb often recommends Invisalign to people with:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Crowded teeth
  • Open bite
  • Gaps between their teeth
  • Generally crooked teeth

When malocclusion is severe, Dr. Robb might suggest getting braces for a few months before starting Invisalign. Still, Invisalign works very well to treat most mild and moderate cases of malocclusion as long as you begin with decent oral health and can follow the instructions closely.

How long will I need to wear my Invisalign aligners?

The amount of time it’ll take you to complete your Invisalign treatment depends on how serious your malocclusion is and whether you use your aligners consistently and correctly. During your consultation, Dr. Robb maps out how your teeth will move over the months or years you use the system.

Most treatments take 12-18 months, and you can see as the results take shape since the aligners are both transparent and removable. To stay on track with treatment and complete your plan in the time that Dr. Robb predicts, you should wear your aligners for 20-22 hours every day.

Each aligner requires one or two weeks of wear, according to Dr. Robb’s instructions.

How should I take care of my Invisalign aligners?

Taking care of your Invisalign aligners helps you complete treatment on time and without complications like cavities or staining.

Avoid using hot water when you clean your aligners and be sure to rinse them well after every meal. You can either get the specialized Invisalign Cleaning System or clean your aligners with your toothbrush and toothpaste.

If you ever misplace, warp, or break an aligner, contact Madison Dental Partners to let Dr. Robb know. She will either tell you to wear a previous set of aligners, move on to the next set, or order a replacement for the missing or broken one.

If you want a straighter or more symmetrical smile without the hassles that come with metal braces, call Madison Dental Partners or schedule an Invisalign consultation online today.
